A recap of our 24-hour family-friendly staycation downtown at the JW Marriott Grand Rapids.
Last month I had the opportunity to experience a 24-hour family staycation right here in town at the JW Marriott Grand Rapids. With much anticipation, we packed up our boys and drove the short 10 minute distance downtown. Traveling with toddlers has never been so enjoyable!
We started our Grand Rapids staycation like any good local would with lunch at Founders Brewing Company. Not only is it totally kid friendly during the day but the food is surprisingly inventive and fresh for a brewery!
After lunch we arrived at the JW Marriott to check into our beautiful one bedroom suite. If craft beer isn’t your style, there are over 200 restaurants and bars within walking distance to the hotel for you to choose from.
Whenever we travel with our kids we invest in a larger one bedroom suite so that the adults don’t have to sit in silence in a dark room once the kids go to bed around 8PM. It’s worth every penny, trust me on this one.
Another staycation pro tip? Book your local babysitter so you can enjoy dinner and drinks without the little ones in tow! Fortunately for us, my little sister lives just 10 minutes from the hotel so she and the boys had fun while Rich and I could sneak away for some quality time together.
When the room service kid’s menu features items like grilled petite steak, grilled chicken and steamed broccoli, there is zero guilt leaving the littles behind!
Rich and I started off our evening outside on the JDek featuring a newly expanded bar area. Offering seasonal cocktails and scratch-made appetizers, you can’t go wrong with their frosty moscow mule and a cheesy pesto flatbread.
As the sun was setting we were able to walk by and check out the stunning garden wall adjacent to the bar at the JDek. Guests can even pick their own fresh herbs to garnish their cocktails and appetizers!
For dinner we headed inside to Six.One.Six to feast on mussels cooked with chorizo, seared salmon with soba noodles and chilled prosecco. Executive Chef, Chris Madsen, alternates the menu on a seasonal basis, offering delicious farm-to-table meals with locally sourced ingredients. Music to this local gal’s ears.
The next morning we slept in and enjoyed breakfast in bed. One of the many reasons I love to travel is that it forces us to slow down, skip the endless to-do list and reconnect as a family. Even if just for 24 hours, it is always worth it to invest in quality time together without every day distractions.
My boys loved hitting the pool in the morning and we loved the fact that we didn’t have to rush around like most days of the week. While traveling with toddlers isn’t always easy, it’s amazing how much less stressful and laid back it is to have a staycation right in your own backyard.
