After months and weeks of counting down summer has officially arrived and the kids are out of school – woohoo! Everything is gravy right? But what about those health goals you’ve worked so hard to reach over the first half of the year? If you’re anything like me, you may be worried about the lack of schedule and change of routine. Fret not, I’ve got 9 simple strategies and life hacks to help you keep your health goals in check all summer long. After all, skinny jean season will be back before we know it.
Shop at the Farmers Market: Every Saturday morning my four year old and I wake up bright and early to visit our local farmers market. Not only does going early mean we beat the crowds but it also gives us first dibs on the freshest produce picked that very morning. By involving my kids in the shopping process not only are they more excited about healthy eating but they also take pride in the produce they helped pick out, pay for and carry home.
After-Dinner Stroll Around Neighborhood: If you have toddlers like I do, you’ve probably heard of the phrase “witching hours” which take place when kids start to get cranky at the end of the day. One of the easiest ways to battle this time of day is to head outside for a family walk after dinner. While these walks don’t replace my daily workout at the gym, it’s a great way to get in a little extra cardio and reconnect with the family after a busy day. Plan an Active Family Vacation: Whenever we travel we like to build in as much activity as possible to help balance out the inevitable indulgences of being on vacation. For example, last summer we headed to Asheville, NC for a family vacation and had a blast hiking to the top of Chimney Rock. When we went to Cancun last fall we started out every day with several hours of swimming in the pools. No matter where your travels take you this summer, do a bit of research beforehand. Chances are, you’re just a click away from a bike rental, a hiking path or a jogging trail to explore.
Fire Up The Grill: Healthy eating couldn’t be any easier during the warm summer months thanks to the grill. Not only does grilling add maximum flavor but it’s an easy, mess-free way to prepare fish, chicken, pork, steak and even pizza! In fact, we love throwing our veggies on the grill including corn, asparagus and eggplant.
Pack Healthy Snacks for Summer Travel and Road Trips: As you know, I heart snacks. I made that very clear in the first video I created for Lorissa’s Kitchen in partnership with Real Simple. In this next video I’m sharing more reasons why healthy snacks are not only delicious but a necessary part of summer travel. Whether it’s homemade granola, my favorite Szechuan Peppercorn Lorissa’s Kitchen or a bag of Indian Spiced Mixed Nuts, I always have a healthy snack at the ready. By keeping high-flavor, shelf stable snacks in my car, purse and gym bag I don’t have to worry about making poor choices or throwing away money on poor quality foods because I was hangry.
Hit The Pool: Our local gym has a great outdoor pool and we take full advantage of it once it opens on Memorial Day weekend! Many neighborhood associations also offer discounted pool memberships as well as local recreation centers and high schools for more affordable options. Beyond that, chances are you have a friend with a pool so take advantage of the long days and get those kids in the pool. I promise they won’t be asking to use their iPod when they’re busy swimming. Similar to afternoon walks, pool season is just another way to sneak in a little extra cardio to your day while working on your tan at the same time. Win Win.
Dine Al Fresco: I don’t know about your kids but mine are not exactly tidy when it comes to meal time. They are messy eaters and sadly we don’t have a dog to clean up the scraps. As a result, we outdoors whenever weather permits. In fact, research shows that as little as 20 minutes of fresh air outdoors is enough to boost your mood. What’s not to love?
Take Advantage of Water Sports: Kayaking is one of my all time favorite water sports. Nothing quite beats the feeling of floating on top of the water, moving with the waves, all by yourself in the middle of a body of water. There’s just nothing quite like it. Whether it’s paddle boarding, tubing, water skiing or canoeing, just get out there! Summer won’t be here forever and I can guarantee you’ll have way more fun than hitting another spin class.
Pick Your Own Fruits and Veggies: Every summer we head to our local farms and orchards to pick as many fruits and vegetables as possible. Blueberries, strawberries, peaches and more, you name it – we are picking it!
