A healthy twist on the classic Rice Krispie treat, your entire family will love this chocolate peanut butter version!

In this Post: Everything you need for Peanut Butter Chocolate Rice Krispie Bars
Recently I was craving an ooey, gooey Rice Krispy treat like it was nobody’s business. (What is it about marshmallows melted in sticks of butter anyway?!) Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, I never have marshmallows on hand in the house. I know better.
Fear not, I combined my love of all things chocolate/peanut butter and nipped that naughty Rice Krispy treat craving in the bud. Not only is this version 10 times as delicious but it doesn’t come with a side dish of guilt. Win win!
Since these treats are gluten free, dairy free and can be made peanut free using almond or sun butter, they are ideal for classroom treats or birthday parties. Wrap the treats individually in plastic wrap for a healthy brown bag lunch treat or stash them in the fridge for your next 3pm sweets craving.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Rice Krispie Bars
Ingredients
- 4 cups crispy brown rice cereal (not puffed rice)
- ¾ cup of honey
- ½ cup natural peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
Instructions
- Combine honey, peanut butter, cocoa powder and vanilla in a small sauce pot over medium heat and whisk until ingredients are smooth and fully melted; remove from heat.
- Add brown rice cereal to a large bowl. Pour warm chocolate peanut butter mixture over the crispy rice and stir until cereal is evenly coated.
- Spread mixture evenly into an 8 x 8 pan and refrigerate for 3 hours before slicing into squares.
These looks delicious, love the fact that it’s only 5 ingredients and you can pronounce all of them.
That is my motto!
This is probably a ridiculous question but I never buy cereal — any examples of a cereal that fits the bill?
Hi Linda – I’m a big fan of Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice Cereal!! Have you tried it?
I love that you didn’t use marshmallows in these!
Thank you Stephanie!! I never have them!
These would be awesome with sunflower seed butter. (I know you said that, but it is worth repeating!!!)
Yes most definitely!! Almond butter too!
Oh yum- this is perfect! I would prefer honey over marshmallow anyway, and these look so gooey and delicious.
You know, I do too. ;) Thanks Wendy!
I MUCH prefer these to regular rice krispie treats anyway. PB+chocolate FTW!
PB + Chocolate FTW is right!! Thanks Joanne!
This looks so easy! Plus, I think I have all of these ingredients on hand! I may have to give this a try tonight. It’s snowing here, so some comfort food may be in order. :) Love that you added the nutrition information too.
Yes these are absurdly easy!!! Also, every single recipe on my blog has nutrition facts! Enjoy and let me know if you try anything else!
I am a huge sucker for Rice Krispie Treats. It’s the only baked good I absolutely can’t keep in the house for fear of eating them for every meal :) These look divine!
I remember you saying that!! Too funny!!
I can’t believe there isn’t a single marshmallow in these! They look so dreamy Liz!
No way Jose!! xoxo
Those look so good. Love that they are vegan too. I would definitely go with sun butter so they were nut free for the kids lunches. Thanks!
Yes totally! I hope you like them Trish!
Um, I think I need to make these pronto. I’m always craving ooey gooey. So glad I don’t indulge those cravings too much. But this will help me for sure. Thanks!
Yes you do!! These are so incredibly yummy!
Chocolate and Peanut Butter are the best combo ever! Can’t wait to whip up your treats to see if my boys miss the mallows :)
Please let me know if they miss them!! If they love chocolate and peanut butter as much as I do, I’m hopeful they won’t notice! :)
This is so great! My kids looove rice krispies, now I can trick them! muahhah! ;) Thanks for a tasty treat!
Let me know what they think !!!
LOVE this Liz. Rice krispies can really hit the spot, but somehow I feel a little less excited when I’m stirring an entire bag of corn syrup (er, marshmallows) and stick of butter together. Yay for a guilt-free twist!
Umm…exactly. These are completely guilt free and I think even more delicious!
These sound amazing! I don’t like marshmallows (but love Rice Krispie Treats) but I know I’d love these even more!
Then these are the answer!! No marshmallows here sista!
I don’t keep marshmallows on hand either…they would barely make it out of the grocery bag before my face was stuffed. I am totally in love with Rice Krispie treats, chocolate and pb so these are pure magic! Lovelovelove that you got away with no marshmallows! Diiiiivine!
Exactly!! Plus let’s be real, marshmallows are probably one of the most processed foods on the planet. ;)
