Tacos are life in our house. Well, at least if you as myself and our boys. My husband, not so much. But that’s another story.

If it was up to me and our boys we would have tacos every night for dinner: breakfast, shrimp, steak, chicken, you name it!

    Taco Seasoning Ingredients

Over the years it dawned on me that not everyone knows how to make homemade taco seasoning so today I’m sharing my go-to taco seasoning recipe.

    Avoiding store-bought seasoning:

There is a reason you want to avoid store-bought seasoning. Is it cheap to purchase? Yes but many of them contain preservatives that most people cannot pronounce or understand. Ingredients like: Maltodextrin, silicon dioxide, malic acid, and others. On one packet I looked at it said partially produced with genetic engineering. What does that mean?

    Spices Used:

My go-to taco seasoning blend includes cumin, oregano (ideally Mexican oregano), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne.  This recipe is easy to tweak to the way you want it.

Cayenne: Don’t like spicy? Omit it to keep the seasoning mild or double it to make the blend spicy. Need more spicy? Then add in some red pepper flakes. Don’t have one of the spices? No problem! Make it your own! Want to skip the smoked paprika? Try chili powder instead. Don’t have onion powder? Just skip it! No garlic powder? Grate in fresh garlic instead.

    Seasoning Uses:

It’s great to use when sauteeing any type of ground meat for tacos including ground beef, turkey or chicken. You can also mix it with olive oil and lime juice to create an easy marinade for meat or veggies before grilling or broiling. Want to make a Mexican salad dressing? Whisk together the taco seasoning mix with olive oil, lime juice, honey, and red wine vinegar.

    Storage and shelf life:

It will last up to 10 months stored in an air-tight container. It does not need to be refrigerated.

    Making larger batches:

This recipe makes just enough for one pound of meat. I like to make a quadruple batch once a month so that it’s always fresh and ready to go.
