Five tips for making back-to-school as stress free as possible – for kids and parents alike! Written in partnership with Lorissa’s Kitchen.
Ready or not, it’s officially back-to-school season! Whether you still have another week of summer vacation like we do here in Michigan or you’ve been back at it for a couple weeks, this time of year can be a stressful one. To help you and your little ones ease back into a new school year, I’m sharing five easy, practical tips for reducing stress during this busy time of year.
My first tip is one we’ve been exercising all summer long: practice your new morning routine before school starts. This one is particularly special for us because we moved into a new neighborhood and our oldest will be heading to elementary school for the first time! Since we are lucky enough to live just down the street, we’ve been having fun practicing the walk to school.
Even if you don’t live walking distance from school, practice the drive and then let the kids hit the playground. The more they explore their new surroundings, the less stress and anxiety they’ll have leading up to that big first day back. Already back in school? Plan a play date with their new pals at the playground. The more comfortable they are with their new school and new friends, the better.
My second tip: pack YOUR lunch when you pack THEIR lunch! This one is so simple yet such a game changer. Afterall, you’re already in the kitchen packing lunches, why not save yourself time the next day and be one step closer to a healthy ready-to-eat meal come lunch time? We are a huge fan of these simple bento boxes that let us mix and match whatever foods we have on hand like apple slices, hummus cups, baby carrots, string cheese or our favorite flavor of Lorissa’s Kitchen.
Of course, back-to-school isn’t just about the little ones. For most parents this time of year is also “back to me” which includes getting back into a regular fitness routine. With the little ones off to school, you have no excuse to get in your daily workout. That said, I have a great tip to make it even easier: pack your gym bag the night before! I do this on a regular basis and it is always such a relief in the morning when I’m busy chasing around two little boys. Pro Tip: Stash your gym bag with a bag of protein-rich Lorissa’s Kitchen for a post-workout snack.
My fourth tip will help you save time during the busy dinner time routine: cook once, eat all week long! At the beginning of the week, whip up a double or triple batch of a versatile protein such Slow Cooker Shredded Chicken or Pulled Pork. Enjoy it with roasted potatoes the first night, in tacos the second night, in soup the third night, you get the idea! The options are limitless and you’ll be so happy to be one step ahead come dinner time.
Last but not least, stay fueled and healthy by keeping your car fully stocked shelf-stable snacks during the daily carpool and sports practice grind. My boys love granola bars, dried fruit, Lorissa’s Kitchen (Ginger Teriyaki is their favorite flavor currently!) and roasted almonds so this time of year I always try to keep the car fully stocked and loaded. Afterall, as any mom can attest- kids love their snacks! Secret Mom Tip: My boys don’t love spicy foods so I always keep a bag or two of Szechuan Peppercorn on hang just for me. Shhh.. it’s our little secret.
What are your best tips for back to school? This is my first year sending BOTH kids off to school so I am all ears!
