Hello Friends. Today, in lieu of a new recipe, I’m sharing what’s on my heart and mind. Recently, some allies in my local community have questioned my sharing of (and adapting of) recipes based on those of other cultures and ethnicities.
As a person with deep ethnic and familial roots who shares and honors the history that shaped my cooking, I know that gathering around a table and enjoying food together is intrinsic in the identity of diverse cultures. In fact, cooking the Syrian and Jewish recipes of my ancestors for my family is my favorite way to stay connected with my heritage.
To that end, I take these concerns seriously, and I have been reflecting on what they mean for the globally-inspired recipes I share, and for how I engage with each of you.
While I genuinely believed I was honoring these cultures by featuring or updating dishes from other countries, I now recognize that marginalized populations may see this activity as disrespectful. It’s not enough to appreciate culinary diversity without also appreciating the cultures that created it. I regret any harm this may have done, and I apologize to anyone who felt hurt by the content I have shared.
I am grateful to have this place where so many of you come to learn and grow in your cooking and food experiences. As I look ahead, I know I can do more to highlight the rich histories and innovative cooking techniques created by people from diverse backgrounds. I also commit to be more inclusive and active in telling those stories across my platforms.
These moments of food discovery are ones I cherish – and I am thankful for the reminder that even as I am inspired by these recipes in my work, I must remain respectful to and engaged with the roots of these cultures and cuisines.
Food is the love language I speak. While I will continue to seek culinary inspiration from other cultures, I also will do more to be respectful and intentional about understanding where these dishes began, being sensitive in my portrayal of those cuisines and teaching others the same.
We all are learning and growing. Please join me as we do so together. Thank you, as always, for your continued love and support. I am so grateful for all of you.
