We love smoothies in this house. Easy to make, portable, and versatile, we always start our day with one of my smoothie recipes.

My boys are now 6 and 8 but as early as 8 months we began introducing them to smoothies made with whole milk yogurt. Ideal for using up leftover fruit, smoothies are the ideal breakfast-in-a-glass packed with vitamins and nutrients to give you lasting energy.

Orange Strawberry Smoothie Recipe

Most recently I created a strawberry orange protein smoothie recipe to use up leftover orange juice I had in the refrigerator. The tangy citrus adds the perfect amount of acidity and zip to balance the sweet and juicy strawberries.

Adding Fruit:

If it’s not strawberry season, feel free to use frozen berries. In fact, every June we go to our local strawberry farm to freeze over 10 pounds of strawberries to use in smoothies all year long.

Liz Blending Smoothie

For natural sweetness, I love blending in a ripe banana. There’s no need to add in additional sugar such as honey as long as you start with ripe fruit that is naturally sweet. Frozen fruit can be used but then I wouldn’t add so much ice.

Pro Tip: Whenever I had a bunch of bananas that are browning before I’m able to enjoy them I like to peel, chop and place in the freezer in a plastic, resealable bag. Then, throughout the coming weeks, I will use those frozen banana cubes to sweeten my smoothies.

Can I Use a Whole Orange Instead of Orange Juice?

Yes absolutely! A whole orange is even better because you’ll get all of the fiber from the fruit.

Preparing in advance:

I wouldn’t recommend making this smoothie more than 30 minutes before you plan to enjoy it. With that said, to save time in the morning, you can place all the ingredients in the blender the night before, refrigerate the blender full of ingredients overnight then simply blend in the morning.

Vegan option:

Simply swap out the yogurt with full-fat coconut milk or water to make vegan.

  1. I followed everything like it called for and my smoothie was super thick and non drinkable. Does it matter if I’m using frozen fruit ? Should I not add ice on top of the frozen fruit I’m using? Thanks for any feedback
