Whether you don’t drink or you’re hosting friends who prefer a non-alcoholic option, having a reliable mocktail recipe is always a lifesaver. From baby showers to parties with kids in the mix, I love offering fun alcohol-free drinks right alongside my favorite party appetizers and snacks (like my butternut squash crostini). With the holidays coming up, this Blackberry Ginger Smash Mocktail is one I always make by the pitcher. You can easily turn it into a cocktail with a splash of rum, but it’s just as delicious and refreshing on its own!

Ingredients

Labeled ingredients for a blackberry ginger smash mocktail on a white counter.
  • Blackberries: Fresh blackberries are plump and juicy, while being naturally sweet.
  • Thyme: Fresh thyme is earthy, peppery, and slightly citrusy in flavor, adding depth to the mocktail. If you don’t have fresh thyme, fresh mint also works well!
  • Lemon: Lemon wedges muddle with the fresh blackberries to add bright, fresh citrus flavor.
  • Ginger beer: A little bit spicy, sharp, and zingy in flavor, while being less sweet than ginger ale.

How to make a Blackberry Ginger Smash Mocktail

Step 1. Place blackberries, lemon wedges, sugar, and thyme in the bottom of a pitcher and breakdown using a muddler or a wooden spoon.

Pouring blackberry ginger smash from a pitcher into a stemless wine glass.

Step 2. Once muddled, add ginger beer and club soda and stir until mixed, then pour into glasses filled with ice.

Garnish with fresh berries and sprigs of thyme, serve, and enjoy your Blackberry Ginger Smash Mocktails!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this blackberry ginger smash ahead of time?

Yes! You can muddle the blackberries, lemon juice, and thyme up to 24 hours in advance. Store the mixture in the fridge, then add the ginger beer right before serving so it stays bubbly and fresh. If you’re prepping for a party, you can also double or triple the recipe and serve it in a pitcher.

What can I use instead of ginger beer?

If you don’t have ginger beer (or prefer something less spicy), ginger ale works great and adds a slightly sweeter flavor. Sparkling water is another option if you want to lighten it up. Just make sure to keep some ginger flavor in the mix so you don’t lose the “ginger smash” vibe.

How do I turn this mocktail into a cocktail?

White rum or vodka blend beautifully with the blackberry and ginger flavors. Start with 1-1½ ounces per serving, mix well, and adjust to taste. You can also spike just individual glasses to keep the rest family-friendly.

It’s like gingerale but more of a “kick” you can find it by club soda / tonic water / margarita mixer. :)
