Blueberry Vodka Lemonade is my go-to big-batch summer cocktail, and the one drink guests ask me for every single time. A homemade blueberry simple syrup (just three ingredients, 30 minutes, mostly hands-off) gives it that deep jewel-toned color and natural berry sweetness. Then there’s my secret: a splash of orange blossom water, a floral ingredient I grew up with in my Syrian family’s kitchen. No other blueberry vodka lemonade recipe uses it, and once you try it, you’ll understand why I can’t imagine it any other way!

The whole pitcher can be prepped the morning of your party. Add the vodka and club soda right before serving and you’ve got a stunning, effortless crowd-pleaser for 16 guests. I love to serve it at summer BBQ’s alongside Slow Cooker Shredded Beef Sliders, Grilled Corn and Zucchini Salad, and Greek Pasta Salad.

Ingredients

  • Fresh or frozen blueberries: These are simmered down into a quick homemade syrup that gives the drink its vibrant color and natural sweetness. Frozen blueberries work just as well as fresh.
  • Sugar: Used to sweeten the blueberry syrup. You can also swap in honey or agave if preferred (see notes below).
  • Fresh lemon juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice makes a big difference here and gives the cocktail its bright, tangy base. Bottled lemon juice will work in a pinch, but fresh is best.
  • Vodka: A smooth, neutral vodka works best so the blueberry and lemon flavors can shine. You can also use blueberry vodka for an extra layer of berry flavor.
  • Orange blossom water: This optional but highly recommended ingredient adds a subtle floral note that makes the drink feel a little more special and elevated. A little goes a long way.
  • Club soda or sparkling water: Adds a light, refreshing fizz right before serving. You can skip it if you prefer a still-style lemonade cocktail.

What is Orange Blossom Water (and Why It Makes This Drink Special)

If you’ve never used orange blossom water before, you’re in for a treat. This fragrant ingredient is made by distilling the blossoms of orange trees and is commonly used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. It adds a delicate floral note that pairs beautifully with bright citrus and sweet fruit (like the blueberries and fresh lemon juice in this cocktail).

The key word here is delicate. Orange blossom water should never taste overpowering or soapy when used correctly. Instead, it brings a subtle, slightly sweet floral aroma that elevates the entire drink and makes it taste a little more special than your average vodka lemonade.

I grew up using orange blossom water in my kitchen, thanks to my Syrian roots, where floral waters like this (along with rose water) are a staple in everything from desserts to drinks. Adding it here is a small nod to those flavors I grew up with, and it’s one of the reasons this recipe stands out from more traditional lemonade cocktails.

You can typically find orange blossom water at Middle Eastern grocery stores, many major supermarkets (check the international aisle), or online. Once you have it on hand, you’ll find yourself reaching for it again and again. It’s just as lovely in fruit salads, baked goods, and even a simple glass of sparkling water.

Variations and Substitutions

This blueberry vodka lemonade is incredibly flexible, making it easy to adjust based on what you have on hand or your personal preferences.

  • Blueberry vodka or blueberry lemonade: You can swap in blueberry vodka or blueberry lemonade for an extra boost of berry flavor. Keep in mind that with adding blueberry flavor, it can also add more, undesired sweetness.
  • Store-bought lemonade shortcut: Short on time? Use a high-quality store-bought lemonade instead of fresh lemon juice and simple syrup. If it’s already sweetened, reduce the blueberry syrup to avoid an overly sugary drink.
  • Frozen vs. fresh blueberries: Frozen blueberries work just as well as fresh when making the syrup and are a great option when berries aren’t in season. No need to thaw—just toss them straight into the saucepan.
  • Honey or agave instead of sugar: You can use honey or agave in place of granulated sugar for the syrup. Both add a slightly different flavor, so start with a little less and adjust to taste.
  • Sparkling vs. still: For a lighter, bubbly drink, add club soda just before serving. Prefer a more traditional lemonade-style cocktail? Simply skip the sparkling water for a still version.
  • Mocktail option: To make this drink non-alcoholic, omit the vodka and replace it with extra club soda or lemonade. It’s just as refreshing and perfect for all ages.

  • 1 cup vodka
  • 4 cups club soda
Blueberry Syrup

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use blueberry vodka instead of plain vodka?

Yes, you can absolutely use blueberry vodka instead of plain vodka. It will enhance the berry flavor and make the drink even more vibrant. Just keep in mind that some flavored vodkas are slightly sweeter, so you may want to reduce the amount of blueberry syrup slightly to keep the drink balanced.

Can I make blueberry vodka lemonade non-alcoholic?

Definitely! To make a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the vodka and replace it with additional sparkling water or lemonade. You’ll still get the same refreshing blueberry-lemon flavor, making it a perfect mocktail option for kids, guests who don’t drink, or daytime gatherings.

How far in advance can I make this?

You can prepare most of this drink ahead of time, which makes it perfect for entertaining. The blueberry syrup can be made up to one week in advance and stored in the refrigerator. You can also mix the lemon juice and syrup up to 24 hours ahead. Wait to add the vodka and sparkling water until just before serving to keep the drink fresh and bubbly.
