This Sweet and Salty Trail Mix is packed with satisfying nuts, dried fruit, crunchy pretzels and a little dark chocolate for good measure.
If you’ve ever driven with little ones in tow, you know that road snacks are essential. And if your kids are anything like mine, they go through them quickly!
To celebrate the kick-off of summer road trips, my friends at Discount Tire asked me to share a quick, easy and healthy snack for the busy travel season. This Sweet and Salty Trail Mix is not only fun to make but is a great excuse to get those little ones in the kitchen to help you make a batch.
My boys love berries so we used dried blueberries and strawberries but feel free to use your favorite fruits. Raisins, figs, apricots or cherries would all be fantastic. Pistachios, peanuts and dark-chocolate covered almonds add heart-healthy fats and a boost of protein to give you energy and keep you satisfied between meals while on the road.
Travel Tip: If your journey has you spending long hours in the car, make it a point to find a park or nature trail along your route. It’s a great way to let the kids burn off energy and the fresh air will give the adults a little energy boost to stay focused for the rest of the drive.
Have fun with this trail mix recipe and make it your own! It will last up to three weeks when stored in an air-tight container, perfect for stashing in the car for when cravings strike.
No forks required.
Sweet and Salty Trail Mix
- 2 cups dried fruit (I used blueberries and strawberries)
- 2 cups nuts (I used raw pistachios and dry-roasted peanuts)
- 1 cups pretzel twists
- 1 cup dark chocolate covered almonds
- Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and divide into snack-sized resealable plastic bags for on-the-go snacking.
Can be stored in an air-tight container for up to 3 weeks.

Wow this trail mix is a necessity for hikes and long car rides! I would use milk chocolate-covered almonds with apricots and dried apples.

Definitely could have used this on my hiking trip this past weekend!
I think I would have to fight off Livi for this snack. I’m always searching for a great toddler road snack.

i could eat this snack mix for lunch :) my kids live for snacks in the car!! And so true about finding a spot to burn off energy. I usually try to make it a point to pack sandwiches and stop somewhere to eat them outside instead of in car, we all usually need the break!
We did that again recently in Asheville and it really was a game changer. Everyone is always happy outdoors you know??

Healthy snacks are definitely a must for long road trips. This trail mix needs to come with us the next time we jump in the car! That being said, I’d eat it any other day of the week, too.
We’ve been eating it after our morning trips to the gym. It’s seriously so tasty!
Snacks can make the difference between a good trip and a horrible trip. Your trail mix looks fab!
