Hand holding a tall glass with an avocado blueberry smoothie

I have been starting most of my mornings with a smoothie for over a decade, since before I became a mom! One thing I have always loved about smoothies, besides the versatility and quickness, is how delicious they are for everyone! My boys have been stealing sips from my cup since they were babies- from my chocolate banana protein smoothie to my orange carrot smoothie.

My Avocado Blueberry Smoothie has been a favorite for years! Especially when the boys were babies and toddlers. A sweet way to make sure healthy fats and vitamins get into their diet without feeling guilty about adding processed sugars. The secret? Sweet and juicy plump blueberries.

Why You’ll Love This Smoothie

  • Naturally sweet and creamy.
  • Makes a nutritious and quick breakfast.
  • Can easily be taken on the go!

Ingredients

  • Avocado: Adds a creamy, smooth texture to the smoothie and is a great source of heart-healthy fats.
  • Blueberries: Fresh and frozen blueberries are both great options for smoothies, and are full of antioxidants.
  • Banana: My favorite way to naturally sweeten smoothies, you can use fresh or frozen.
  • Oats: Full of fiber and protein, makes the smoothie more filling.
  • Yogurt: I usually use plain Greek yogurt for the added protein, but you can use vanilla flavored as well.
  • Flax seed meal: Doesn’t do anything to the taste, but adds important omega 3 fatty acids.

Easy Substitutions

  • Do a mixed berry blend, or swap the blueberries out for raspberries or blackberries!
  • Make it dairy free by using almond or oat milk instead of the yogurt.

How to Make an Avocado Blueberry Smoothie

Step 1. Cut your avocado in half to remove the pit and slice the fruit away from the skin.

Step 2. Then add the banana to your blender with the yogurt and oats.

Step 3. Then add either your fresh or frozen blueberries and the avocado. Finish with the flax seed meal.

Step 4. Add some ice and blend until smooth, adding more ice or water until you reach your desired consistency.

I love to garnish mine with additional blueberries and an avocado slice, but anyway you serve it, enjoy your Avocado and Blueberry Smoothie!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do oats need to be cooked before adding to a smoothie?

Nope! Oats and oatmeal can be added and blended raw into smoothies, totally safe to eat.

Are avocados good in smoothies?

Yes! They add great nutrients, and also add to a dreamy, creamy texture. I love it in my Pineapple Banana Avocado Smoothie and my healthy copycat of a shamrock shake.

What fruit goes well with avocado?

Mixed berries, tropical fruits like pineapple, kiwi, or mango, and many citrus all go well with avocado.

Liz’s Notes

For stronger flavor, use frozen fruit and you won’t have to use as much ice! It’ll keep your smoothie flavor from getting watered down.
Make this smoothie ahead of time! You can freeze the individually portioned ingredients for this smoothie in a bag then just toss it all in a blender with some water when you’re ready to make it!

Meh. I found this smoothie a bit on the tasteless side. I was looking for a zmoothie to use up a bit of avocado and this one held promise with the blueberry and banana combo. However, it just didn’t live up to my hopes. I did substitute coconut milk for the water and ice and use all frozen fruit, but this shouldn’t have resulted in the lack of flavour

My one-year-old loved this smoothie! It was just sweet enough from the banana, and a little tart from the yogurt. Very yummy! I am trying to find ways to get her more calories and nutrients throughout the day, and this fit the bill!

Super excited to give this to my 7 month old to for his first smoothie! He loves all of these ingredients, although I will be subbing oats for an oats and quinoa mix because I don’t have just oats. Hope it comes out!
