Fruit Kababs with Ginger Lemon Yogurt Sauce

These fruit kabobs are inspired by my childhood and my beautiful mother’s classic Fruit Salad with Honey Yogurt Dressing.

My siblings and I grew up eating plain yogurt (never artificially sweetened) and my mom regularly added honey and vanilla to sweeten it for fruit salads. Now that I’m a mom, it’s exciting to create new snack recipes to share with my children.

Create Ginger Lemon Yogurt Sauce

First, in a small bowl, whisk together ginger lemon yogurt sauce by combining all the ingredients listed below, start with adding lemon juice to plain, low-fat yogurt. Yogurt is simple, delicious, full of protein and a good source of calcium — and that’s before you even add the fruit!

Secondly, after you add lemon juice, zest the lemon. The brightness of the lemon is a great addition for these fruit kabobs.

Next, add vanilla to the sauce for flavor.

After you add vanilla, slice the ginger root to grate. It’s true: fresh fruit, particularly berries, almost always tastes better with lemon zest and grated ginger root.

Once you slice the ginger root, grate it and add it to the sauce. In addition to being a stomach-easing remedy, ginger has natural anti-inflammatory and metabolic benefits.

After you add ginger to the sauce, blend all of the ingredients together to create one delicious flavor party!

As a last step for the ginger lemon yogurt sauce, add honey to kick up the sweetness an extra notch. Are you a parent of littles who can’t have honey yet? Skip the honey, it’s purely optional.

Next, cut the fresh fruit to prepare them for the kabobs. I love taking trips to my local farmer’s market and finding sweet, ripe berries and melon for recipes like this!

In the summer, I like to use strawberries, melon, bananas and clementines for fruit kabobs. I also recommend blueberries, watermelon or raspberries. Get creative and mix up the fruit selection!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you zest a lemon without a zester?

Yes! You can also use a paring knife or vegetable peeler. Either tool can also do the job. You will need to julienne the lemon peel, then cut lemon peel strips crosswise and dice.

What size skewers do I need for fruit kabobs?

It depends on how big you want the fruit kabobs to be. I typically use 10-inch bamboo skewers.

How do I display fruit kabobs for a special event?

My favorite way to display fruit kabobs is by placing them in a vase or using an edible base.

How long does the yogurt sauce last in the refrigerator?

If kept in an airtight container in your refrigerator, it will last up to two weeks. However, it is important to look at the date of your yogurt container. It will taste best with the freshest yogurt in the first 7 days.
