Sharp cheddar cheese turns rich and creamy when melted and pairs perfectly with tart, crisp apple slices in this grilled cheese sandwich with apples.

A chill is in the air and when I need a dose of comfort, nothing makes me feel more cozy than a warm grilled cheese sandwich (even better if served with my Roasted Root Vegetable Soup or Turkish Red Lentil soup for dunking.) My Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Apples is a dish I’ve been feeding my boys since they were little kids. Not only is the flavor incredible, but the bit of crunch from the apple really elevates your typical sandwich.

Why You’ll Love this Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Apples

  • The tart sweetness of a crisp apple is the perfect balance to salty, tangy cheese. The perfect balance of sweet and savory!
  • It takes a kid favorite and makes it just a tad bit healthier, so you don’t have to feel bad if grilled cheese is all your child will eat!
  • It’s so easy to make, and can be done in under 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Ingredients for grilled cheese sandwich with apples against white background.
  • Bread: You can use any type of bread, but I prefer a seedy, whole grain or rye over white bread.
  • Cheese: A nice sharp cheddar cheese, creamy mozzarella, or a tangy gouda, all types of cheese would taste great in this sandwich.
  • Apple: If you like it tart, use a granny smith apple, otherwise use something a bit sweeter like a gala or fuji apple.
  • Butter: Helps get the outside of the sandwich golden-brown and toasted.

Switch Things Up

  • Swap the butter. For a bit more of a tangy flavor, use mayonnaise instead of butter when cooking your sandwiches.
  • Add some protein. Thin slices ham or prosciutto would taste great with the cheese and apples, and add some protein to the sandwich.

How to Make A Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Apples

Step 1. Take your slices of bread and butter one side of each.

Step 2. On the unbuttered side, layer thin slices of cheese and apples, before closing the sandwich with another bread slice (butter side out).

Step 3. On a griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat, add your sandwiches with the butter side down.

Step 4. Cook on each side 2-3 minutes, until crispy and golden on the outside, and the cheese has melted on the inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does cheese go well with apples?

Yes! It’s a delicious combo of sweet and savory, with the sweet, crisp apples and the soft, tangy cheese.

What is the best kind of cheese for grilled cheese?

The best cheese is a cheese that melts easily and stays that perfect gooey, stringy consistency. For that reason, cheddar is my go-to for grilled cheese sandwiches.

What do you serve with grilled cheese?

Grilled cheese goes great with many soups, especially a tomato soup.

Oh I LOVE Farmer’s Cheese! It’s always a special treat for us, because we don’t go to the Amish store often enough to get it all the time…when we really should. I’ll most likely be heading out there this weekend because we have family visiting from NY, so I’ll have to pick up some cheese so I can try this sandwich…I’ve never had apples on a sandwich before!
