Spoonful of maple and brown sugar microwave oatmeal.

My boys eat oatmeal almost every morning for a few simple reasons: it’s ready in 90 seconds, nutritious, affordable and delicious. What more can one ask for in a healthy breakfast recipe? If you think you need a store-bought packet of instant oatmeal to have it ready in 90 seconds, think again.

Making your own homemade instant oatmeal is quick and simple! I decided to use a classic flavor combination for my Maple and Brown Sugar Microwave Oatmeal. Easy to customize, this oatmeal is naturally gluten-free, and can be made dairy-free as well.

Why You’ll Love this Maple and Brown Sugar MIcrowave Oatmeal

  • Because it can be made in the microwave, it’s ready in less than 5 minutes!
  • It’s so quick and easy, your kids can make it for themselves.
  • It’s warm and filling, which makes it the perfect breakfast before school or work.

Ingredients

  • Oats: Full of fiber and iron, I usually use old fashioned oats for microwave oatmeal.
  • Flax seed meal: Doesn’t add anything in flavor or texture, but is a hefty source of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Brown sugar: Adds a deeper, rich sweetness from the molasses.
  • Vanilla: A natural flavor enhancer.
  • Maple syrup: I prefer to use true maple syrup, but you can use pancake syrup if that’s all you have.
  • Milk: I usually use non-fat milk, but you can use any non-dairy milk like almond milk or oat milk, too.

Shake Things Up

  • Add some spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cocoa powder are all great ways to boost the flavor of this oatmeal.
  • Add some texture. If you like a bit of a crunch in your oatmeal, you can top it with chia seeds, walnuts, or pecans.
  • Add some fruit. Fresh, frozen, and dried fruit all go great with oatmeal! Raisins, bananas, blueberries, and strawberries are some of my personal favorites.

How to Make Maple and Brown Sugar MIcrowave Oatmeal

Step 1. Add your oats and brown sugar to a bowl.

Step 2. Then add the flax seed meal and a pinch of salt.

Step 3. Add the vanilla extract, maple syrup, and milk.

Step 4. Mix until all ingredients are evenly combined, then put in the microwave for about 90 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microwaving oatmeal healthy?

Using the microwave to cook your oatmeal is just as good for you as cooking on the stove. Plus, it’s faster!

Is oatmeal better with milk or water for weight loss?

Using water instead of milk will lower the fat and calorie content, but there are other nutrients and benefits to using milk. Not to mention, it makes it creamier!

Does cooking oats destroy nutrients?

While it may remove some of the nutrients, it isn’t enough to make it a huge difference. If you’re really worried about it, you can try overnight oats instead!

I love that it is a microwave recipe! I really love oatmeal esp when it is in it’s own container but I just discovered that I am most likely allergic to certain items in the flavor I’ve been buying. So now I am going to make my own. Thanks for making it easy.

My picky teens who love their big-box packets 100% approve of this recipe. I tried making w/ 1/2 the flax seed (my youngest has a bleeding disorder and this ingredient increases bleeding) and a little less maple syrup (as I kicked the jug) and my oldest said it was “less sweet than normal” so making per the recipe when it comes to the sugars is probably the trick. Also, for folks worried about sugar/calories, go with maple over brown sugar as natural sugars are easier to digest.

You can reduce the sugar by eliminating maple and brown sugar. :) I like bananas too!
