Dipping a tortilla chip into protein packed baked hummus dip.

The holidays bring many things I enjoy, but one of them is hosting! Whether it’s a multiple course meal or a bunch of appetizers, I love coming up with menus and bringing people together with food. I also love finding new ways to use my homemade hummus, like in my hummus and hushwee pinwheels or hummus pizza with Greek tapenade and serving it with baked corn tortilla chips or homeade pita bread!

Today I want to share my latest creation which is a deliciously simple Protein Packed Baked Hummus Dip. Easy to make for a crowd, it’ll be the hit appetizer at your next party. Or make it for a healthy snack to serve your family!

Why You’ll Love This

  • It’s a great use of that leftover Thanksgiving turkey!
  • Can be simply made with less than 5 ingredients, or dressed up with as many toppings as you’d like!
  • It’s naturally gluten-free, and can be made to be vegetarian and vegan as well!

Ingredients

Ingredients for protein packed baked hummus on a white background, labeled.
  • Chicken or turkey: Use up that rotisserie chicken or finish off the leftover turkey by shredding it and adding it to this dip.
  • Hummus: Made from chickpeas and tahini, it’s a creamy and nutty Middle-Eastern dip.
  • Cheese: I like to use a sharp cheddar, but almost any cheese would taste great.
  • Toppings: Cilantro, red onion, avocado, tomato, parsley, and cotija cheese are just some of my favorite toppings for this dip.
  • Wild Wonders peppers: Sunset Wild Wonders are not only bright and colorful, they are also vine-ripened with very few seeds, which make them perfect for snacking and dipping!

Easy Substitutions

  • If you want to make this dish vegan or vegetarian, you can omit the chicken or turkey, and use black beans instead! Leave out the cheese, or use a cheese substitute.
  • You can use plain hummus, but using a roasted garlic hummus will really up the flavors!
  • While I love the Wild Wonders mini peppers with this hummus dip, lots of veggies taste good with it. Cucumber is great, and Sunset sells Qukes that are the cutest mini cucumbers just perfect for dipping!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hummus dip high in protein?

Since it’s made with chickpeas, hummus naturally has a good amount of plant-based protein. But by mixing it with meat like chicken or beef, you can really amp up the protein content!

What tastes good to dip in hummus?

Traditionally, it’s eaten with pita bread and raw vegetables. Tortilla chips and other crackers taste great with it, too! I have a great homemade pita bread recipe if you’d like to give it a try!

How can I jazz up hummus?

There are so many ways you can change up your hummus flavor and jazz it up. Even as simple as adding some fresh lemon juice or olive oil, and topping it with fresh herbs and spices.

Liz’s Notes

Dish can be prepped ahead of time and baked right before guests arrive. If you want to keep it vegetarian I love using black beans instead of chicken/turkey!
