I have probably made some version of chicken and sweet potatoes every single week for the past ten years. Not because I planned to, because it works. The sweet potatoes go with everything! The chicken absorbs every spice, every marinade, every flavor direction you throw at it. And together, they make a meal that actually keeps you full.

Whether it’s a fast sheet pan dinner I throw together on a Tuesday or the slow cooker chicken curry that has been the most popular recipe on this site for years, this is a combination that never gets old. I pulled together 20 of my favorites so you have options no matter what kind of night it is.

Why This Combination Works

Sweet potatoes have a natural sweetness that plays beautifully against savory, spiced, and bright flavors. Cinnamon, cumin, za’atar, curry, lemon. They go with all of it! That versatility is exactly why I always have a few sitting on my counter.

What’s the best way to roast sweet potatoes with chicken?

Cut your sweet potatoes into 1-inch cubes, toss with olive oil, salt, and whatever spices you’re using, and roast at 400 to 425 degrees F alongside your chicken. Boneless breasts take about 20 to 25 minutes. Bone-in pieces take closer to 40 to 50 minutes. Do not crowd the pan! Give everything room to actually roast, not steam.

Is chicken and sweet potato good for meal prep?

It is one of the best meal prep combinations I know. Both reheat well, hold their texture in the fridge for up to four days, and work in grain bowls, wraps, salads, or straight from the container with nothing else required.

A Few Tips From the Chef

  • Cut your sweet potatoes evenly. Uneven pieces mean some are mushy while others are still firm. Aim for 1-inch cubes.
  • Do not crowd the pan. This is the number one sheet pan mistake. Give everything room to roast, not steam. Use two pans if you need to.
  • Season separately. Toss the sweet potatoes with their oil and spices before the chicken goes on. Everything gets properly coated that way.
  • Finish with something bright. A squeeze of lemon juice, fresh parsley, a drizzle of tahini. It makes everything taste more alive.
